Foraging

The usframe crew enjoys cooking on a campfire, and any other outdoor venue

A must for campers is to use that campfire for cooking. And, we do not intend to keeping the diet to hot dogs and schmores. Oh no, there is way to much fun to be had. Not to mention, satisfying the ol' tastebuds. From using a stick, to cast iron utensils, we'll take a look at all sorts of options.

Foraging on the Trail

Mmm, fortune was with us, wineberries hitting prime ripeness. All sorts of wild goodness is out there waiting to be added to your diet.

Now and again Mother Nature does provide an abundant supply, so why not take some wineberries home and bake a delicious healthy pie! We used a simple recipe and the results were fantastic

Usframe crew Grabs Some Crayfish for Dinner

In Part 1, we head off to a local stream that we believe might be a good source of crayfish. Sure, we could build a cage, or just go fishing. Getting into the water on a hot day and just splashing around and goofing off flipping rocks over adds another element to life that should be experienced. This video shows the collecting process.

Part 2 involves washing the crayfish with fresh water, and getting water to boiling. The pot of water has a half cup of salt added, as well as garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Other than the salt, just use you favorite seasonings. The crayfish pop up to the top of the water after a few minutes. We turn the heat off after 4-5 minutes, and allow them to fully cook in the water for a few more minutes before pulling them out. In this instance, we eat them right from the shell. A future video will be posted where the crayfish are prepared in a sauce for ladling over pasta.
